Sierra Leone, Liberian, Guinean Community Mental Health and Training Education Project

Sierra Leone, Liberian, Guinean Community Mental Health and Training Education Project

The SCMHTE Project is a joint effort of Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) and the African Communities Public Health Coalition (ACPHC) to reduce the stigma of mental illness in the Sierra Leone, Liberian, and Guniean communities.

This 6-month project took place from October 2015 – March 2016. The ACPHC provided culturally competant training to trusted and selected volunteer community members, in order for them to become ‘lay-experts’ on mental health issues, trauma, crisis intervention, and community mental health services that are available through public mental health systems and grassroot organizations.

Additionally advocates were trained to facilitate community mental health awareness presentations to their larger communities, and to assist community members in a mental health crisis.
