October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in recognition of this important cause, the Greater Los Angeles Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Taskforce, African Coalition, and the International Institute of Tolerance came together to host a powerful panel discussion on gender-based violence. This event focused on a range of critical issues, including domestic violence, female genital mutilation (FGM), and human trafficking.
The panel brought together subject matter experts and advocates who shared valuable insights and resources for individuals affected by domestic violence. The discussion highlighted the importance of understanding the various forms of gender-based violence and the impact they have on individuals and communities. In addition to providing critical information about available resources, the webinar also introduced a unique perspective—the male role in combating domestic violence—shedding light on how men can be allies and contribute to ending violence in our communities.
Throughout the event, attendees learned about support services for those experiencing domestic violence, including legal assistance, counseling, and shelter options. The conversation also explored how these issues intersect with other forms of violence and discrimination, particularly within immigrant communities, where cultural and social barriers can sometimes complicate access to help.
The African Coalition has been an active participant in the FGM Taskforce’s monthly activities, advocating for the well-being of immigrant communities and raising awareness about the profound impact of FGM. Through our involvement, we continue to work toward building a more inclusive and informed approach to tackling gender-based violence in all its forms.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this important conversation, and we remain committed to empowering communities, offering support to survivors, and raising awareness about the urgent need to end gender-based violence in all its forms.
